Divorce is the best option for many Texas couples who are in an unhappy marriage. Although you know divorce was the right choice, it is common to still find yourself struggling to adjust to post-divorce life.

Along with the natural feelings of sadness and loss that come with most divorces, you could also still be experiencing stress and anxiety from the divorce process. Going through a divorce is a long, costly process that takes a physical and mental toll on people.

You may come out of a divorce struggling with a sense of identity and wondering who you are, especially if you were in a long-term marriage. Perhaps you do not even remember what it was like to be single, since being a husband or wife has been such as essential piece of your identity for so long.

Blending your old and new self

The following tips can help you navigate these complicated feelings and develop a healthy post-divorce life.

Many people throw themselves into new situations after a divorce. While developing new hobbies and interests can help you focus on the future and start shaping your new life, proceed with caution.

Remember that while focusing on the future is a positive thing, it should not be at the expense of your past. The goal is not to throw away your old identity entirely but to strike a balance between your formerly married self and your new single self.

Your relationship with your former spouse matters

The relationship you have with your former spouse can impact your post-divorce life, either positively or negatively. Studies show that former spouses who remain on friendly terms with each other generally report more positive post-divorce experiences.

Sometimes you may need to stay in touch with your ex for practical reasons, such as raising your children. Keeping the relationship amicable and respectful can go a long way.

However, unresolved issues or feelings between one or both spouses can cause a negative outcome after divorce. If you are in this situation, it is probably best to cut ties with your ex or speak to them only about your children.

Divorce is never easy, but educating yourself on how to adjust to your new situation increases your chance of finding happiness post-divorce.
