Child support payments are strictly meant to benefit the child. The courts that handle these family law matters look at a number of factors before determining what is fair. In general, this means looking at the noncustodial parent’s income and subtracting Social Security, federal income tax, state income tax and health care expenses. A judge will then award a certain percentage based on the number of children you share.
 

It is possible to lower a support payment if the noncustodial parent already has other children whom they financially support. It all depends on your specific situation and the needs of your child. After a judge makes a ruling, it is legally binding. If you fail to pay support, you may face steep consequences. This can include jail time and harsh fines.
